Of flutterers and flautists

Video, with an interview with a butterfly expert, from NPR.

A few years ago, during the Dublin Piano Competition, I watched a pianist swat a fly without missing a note. Not too long before that, I’d made a mess of an important recital because I noticed a hair on the keys of the piano, and couldn’t take my mind off it.

I think the incredible focus required of classical musicians is something a lot of people take for granted.
